Top Reasons to Visit Your Local Farmers’ Market
The season is winding down. This is your last chance to stock up on fresh produce from your local farmers’ markets before they close. Enjoy local and international fare, along with finely crafted products created by artisans.
Come with me, as I take you to a local market. It is surrounded by acres of rich agricultural land in full harvest, so it sets the mood as you drive through the countryside to get there.
I enjoy the variety of goods available at this particular market. You never know what you are going to see. The regular vendors are often joined by newcomers. Only the weather can put a damper on things.
There are items on the tables which have come down from the pioneer days. The heritage farm equipment and antiques are a reminder of how basic things were in rural Canada pre-technology. Because the area is home to Amish and Mennonite communities, some of the old fashioned equipment found in the market is still in use.
Everything from plants, honey, preserves, and baked goods to sausages and smoked meats makes this market a treasure trove of creative inspiration. This is the place to pick up bushels for preserving, and canning. Many ideas come to mind for the holiday season. Check out a recipe here.

At this particular market, there is a livestock auction which starts early before the market. I feel that the market grew from the original auction. You can sometimes hear the cows in the background as you walk around the market.
I took a quick peek in the auction room and found the most interesting collection of seating I have ever seen. What would I want to sit on if I was only used to sitting in tractors and combine harvesters all day?

Final Thoughts
If you go to a farmers’ market, take your time to enjoy and appreciate everything on offer. Nothing is wasted, and simple items have been creatively upcycled.
Take the time to talk to the vendors if they are not too busy, they are happy to share their stories and their creative process that has gone into their items.
